Internationaler Mathematiker-Kongress (ICM)

Im Jahre 1994 fand vom 3. bis zum 11.August ein für die Mathematik an der ETH und der Universität Zürich wichtiges Ereignis statt: Der Internationale Mathematiker Kongress, ICM 94. Diese Kongresse, die unter der Schirmherrschaft der International Mathematical Union (IMU) organisiert werden, finden (ausser in Kriegszeiten) alle vier Jahre statt. Schon der erste Kongress in dieser Reihe wurde 1897 in Zürich durchgeführt, und auch 1932 trat wiederum Zürich als Gastgeberin auf. Im Jahre 1994 übernahm ein gesamtschweizerisch zusammengestelltes Komitee die Organisation des Anlasses; fast 2500 Mathematiker und Mathematikerinnen aus 92 verschiedenen Länder nahmen daran teil.

Ausschnitt aus Eröffnungsrede von Beno Eckmann, Ehrenpräsident des Kongresses:

Mathematics [is] the art of creating concepts out of vague intuition and evidence of the real world and of everyday life; and then to put these concepts to work and experiment with them by all available means [...]; to see relations, conjectures and theorems emerge; and to prove the same by the good old traditional proof, which is at the heart of our science. For mathematics is [...] an abstract intellectual enterprise, despite the fact that natural sciences and technology, and much more, bear witness to its practical usefulness. Sometimes it is the same person who speculates and conjectures, provides proofs, and makes applications to our real world; but more often this is done by different people and at different times.
